I am planning to go on a photo journalism safari to Africa. As I will be quite isolated at many times during this trip I am quite glad that I have been able to get hold of a telephone that makes use of a global wireless network so that I can be in contact with people at all times. As somebody who has been too many isolated places in the past I cannot say how pleased I am that technology has advanced significantly over the years with regards to telecommunications. This is why phones like the iPhone use so much bandwidth. Its crazy how people think the real debate lies with the iPhone vs Droid but the reality is that its more about those phones verse non data and bandwidth hogging phones. That’s really how call quality would improve. Digital voice isn’t simply “on” or “off” or anything like that. They can raise or lower the voice encoding bitrate. It’s like MP3 — 320 kbit/sec sounds better than 128 kbit/sec. But on a cellphone it’s probably more like 1 kbit/sec ! And of course the more crowded areas (NY, SF, LA) have more bandwidth problems. There are TONS of iPhone users in those areas. When Verizon gets the same number of datra-centric users, I’m sure they’ll have problems too.
